Why a bus?
We have wanted an RV for a long time so that we could easily travel as a family. Having a semi-large family makes staying in hotels problematic and/or expensive and we aren’t really the tenting sort. Since I telecommute for work and we homeschool, we have the perfect arrangement for travel and have felt like an RV or motorhome would be the best way to take advantage of that while the kids are still young.
Unfortunately, commercial RVs are insanely expensive. So a few months ago I started reading about bus conversions. I ruled out a coach as a first project and decided that converting a school bus would be ideal. They are inexpensive, parts are widely available, usually well maintained in fleet service, and are built like tanks.
Another benefit of the project is that it will give us a good opportunity to work on something together as a family and for the kids (and me!) to learn some skills that we wouldn’t otherwise.
